Greeks from all 19
triads packed Alumni Hall
The Greek Sing Kick Off Party kicked off Greek Sing with a
bang on a Wednesday in Alumni Hall. All 19 triads were present for a short
preview of each show. The sneak peek featured 90 second snippets of each
all-greek pairing’s themed performance. Every group brought an entourage of up
to 10 additional, non-dancing members to pack alumni hall, all of whom worked
together to keep the energy high. Afterwards, spirit points were awarded to the
Top Three performances and other, smaller awards were handed out by the judges.
Delta Gamma, Alpha Epsilon Pi and Delta Kappa Epsilon (“Newsies”) captured the
top award, with Delta Upsilon, Delta Tau Delta, and Delta Zeta (“The Lion
King”) taking second and Alpha Gamma Rho, Alpha Delta Pi, and Pi Lambda Phi (“Footloose”)
finishing third.
Greek Sing Executive
VP Nick Doyle (Delta Lambda Phi)
acted as Emcee for the night
Theater students Amanda
Reiser & David Kisan joined IFC Executive VP Chip Ray and PHC VP of Communications
Amanda Cillo joined Greek Sing Executive Director Carolyn Hayford (Center) as
judges.
It was a night filled with many highs and few lows. Chloe
Griffin, Greek Sing chair for Delta Gamma Sorority, began the night with
optimism. Her favorite part of the kickoff party was “… many performers getting their first taste
of what its like to perform in front of a crowd.” Many of the talented
performers in Greek Sing have never set foot on a stage, and in some cases,
have never performed anything in front a large group. If there were any first
time performers in the Delta Gamma preview of “Newsies”, it did not show. Delta
Gamma, along with Alpha Epsilon Pi and Delta Kappa Epsilon, featured strong
ensemble singing and few mistakes on a packed stage.
Tau Kappa Epsilon,
Alpha Xi Delta, and Alpha Kappa Alpha showed early promise with flawless flips
and swings in their preview of “Saturday Night Fever.”
None of the highs of the night were quite as high as the
note hit by the leading man in the Kappa Delta, Pi Kappa Phi, and Theta Delta
Chi rendition of Green Day’s “American Idiot.” Patrick Fedena, who helped his
triad win Best Vocals and has had parts in a dozen other shows, brought
irreplaceable experience to the show. Kappa Delta Greek Sing chair Amanda Jacobs
took part in the excitement of the evening but noted that her favorite part of
Greek Sing is yet to come, sharing that “the shows really get exciting in
costume.”
Members of the
executive committee directed captains and made sure everything was run
correctly
For such an outstanding night of performance, the occasional
technical hiccup could not reduce the spirits of some groups. Delta Chi, Alpha
Chi Omega, and Phi Kappa Theta had the microphone stop functioning twice during
their performance, but kept their performance on track and finished strong.
Some groups surprised the audience with genre-bending performances, like the
Alpha Gamma Rho, Alpha Delta Pi, and Pi Lambda Phi performance of “Footloose.”
1980’s dance moves and classic rock merged seamlessly with modern stepping to
impress the judges. Alpha Delta Pi Greek Sing Chair Jennifer Rausch had a big
picture view of the night, relating that it was “Really exciting to see
everyone’s hard work pay off so quickly.”
Kappa Delta Rho, Pi
Beta Phi, and Beta Theta Pi strike a pose during their rendition of “Grease.”
The 2012 Greek Sing Kick Off Party was a huge success and every
triad showed great potential for the full show in December.
Now, watch out next week for some great information from the Greek Sing Blood Drive we had. We thank everyone that came out and donated, because it really was for such a great cause.
